Performance driving isn't "driving fast." It's the ability to control the car with precision, predictability, and safety. You plan before you act, understand what the car is doing, and manage grip, weight, and line the right way.

Driving Position and Control

A correct seating position is the foundation of control. The right distance from the wheel, a stable back, precise pedal control, and a proper grip on the wheel all give you sharper responses and more confidence.

Vision and Reading the Road

Your vision is one of the most important tools in performance driving. Look further ahead and you'll plan better, react earlier, and drive smoother and more precisely. In a corner, don't look at where the car is right now — look first at the apex, then immediately at the exit point (track-out). As your speed rises, push your eyes further out: looking too close causes sharp corrections, late reactions, and an unstable rhythm.

In a corner that leads straight into the next one (like the northern sections at Nes Harim), if you only look at the current corner, you're already behind on preparing for the next one.

COMMON MISTAKE

Dropping your eyes to the hood or to the car ahead of you. The fix: anchor your gaze far ahead — where you want the car to go, not where it is right now.

Grip and Tires

Your tires are the only point of contact between the car and the road. Every input you make — braking, accelerating, turning — passes through them. Good driving means managing grip intelligently, not fighting it.

Weight Transfer

Every input you make shifts the car's mass. Under braking, weight flows forward — the front tires load up and the rear tires unload. Under acceleration, weight flows backward — front grip drops. In a corner, weight flows outward — the outside tires load up more than the inside ones. A sudden input moves that weight too fast, catches the car off guard, and breaks its balance; a smooth input lets the weight "flow" gradually and keeps grip stable.

Turning in right after hard braking: the weight is still sitting on the front. If you turn the wheel sharply at that exact moment, you're asking the front tires for more grip than they have to give, and the car reacts unpredictably.

COMMON MISTAKE

Lifting off the throttle abruptly mid-corner. The weight rushes forward, the rear loses load, and most drivers react with another sharp input that makes things worse. The fix: hold the throttle steady, or ease off gently.

Braking the Right Way

Braking isn't just slowing down — it's a tool for control, balance, and setting up the corner. The classic sequence: brake in a straight line at the end of the straight before turn-in, apply maximum pressure at the start of the brake zone, then gradually release the brake as you turn in. That initial pressure creates the forward weight transfer that loads the front for the corner; the gradual release keeps the car balanced. You set your brake point in advance, based on the corner's characteristics — not on a feeling in the moment.

At the Arad race track, you review the brake points for the main corners with your instructor before every session. If you're still searching for the brake point while you're driving, you're already too late.

COMMON MISTAKE

Braking hard mid-corner. It's better to brake early, hard, and short — then release the brake gradually before turn-in. A sharp brake application mid-corner throws weight forward and breaks lateral grip.

Good braking starts long before your foot touches the pedal.

SAFETY

Advanced techniques like trail braking — gradually releasing the brake as you carry it into the corner — are taught only on a track with a certified instructor. They aren't suitable for public roads.

The Racing Line

The racing line is the planned path your car takes through a corner. The basic principle is outside-inside-outside: enter from the outside of the track, touch the inside at the apex, and exit (track-out) back to the outside. This approach opens up the effective radius of the corner, reduces the lateral load on your tires, and lets you carry higher speed with more stability. The shortest line is almost never the right one: a tighter radius forces a lower speed and leaves you less grip to work with.

A corner that leads onto a long straight: the exit matters far more than the entry. If you sacrifice a little at entry to get on the throttle earlier at exit, you gain an advantage all the way down the straight that follows.

COMMON MISTAKE

Hugging the inside line to "take the shortcut." The result: a tighter radius, a lower maximum speed, and a cramped exit.

Apex: Early, Geometric, or Late

The apex is the point where your car comes closest to the inside of the corner. There are three main approaches: a geometric apex — a symmetrical line that touches the inside at the corner's geometric center; an early apex — touching the inside too soon, which forces an unplanned wide exit and costs you exit speed; and a late apex — turning in later, touching the inside past the geometric center, which lets you get on the throttle earlier and exit wide and stable. On corners that lead onto a straight, a late apex is almost always the better choice.

A slow corner before a long straight: a late apex costs you a slightly slower entry, but gains you half a second down the entire straight that follows, because you're back on the throttle sooner.

COMMON MISTAKE

Taking an early apex to "get into the corner fast." The result: by the end of the corner, the car is already at the outside edge with nowhere to go, the steering stays locked over — or you run off the track.

Turn-in, Mid-corner, Exit

Every corner breaks down into three distinct phases. At turn-in, you're still on the outside, finishing your braking and starting to apply steering gradually — a mistake here carries through the entire corner. At mid-corner, the car is around the apex, steering angle is at its peak, and the throttle is neutral or opening gently. At exit, you unwind the wheel gradually and get on the throttle — the car moves out to the outside of the track. Every second you're late getting on the throttle at exit costs you time all the way down the straight that follows.

Exiting a corner onto a straight, the difference between getting on the throttle now versus 0.3 seconds later adds up to several car lengths by the end of the straight.

Understeer and Oversteer

Understeer is when the front tires lose grip before the rear ones, and the car pushes wide of the line you want. Common causes: entering too fast, turning the wheel too sharply, or getting on the throttle too early in a front-wheel-drive car. Oversteer is the opposite — the rear tires lose grip before the front ones, and the back of the car rotates more than you expect. Causes include abruptly lifting off the throttle mid-corner (lift-off oversteer), overloading the rear in a rear-wheel-drive car, or a sharp steering input combined with a slippery surface. Both are signs that you've exceeded your tires' grip budget.

COMMON MISTAKE

Reacting to understeer by adding more steering lock. That only makes it worse: the front tires are already past their limit, so more steering input won't add grip. The fix: ease off the steering slightly, let the car settle, and get back on the correct line.

The goal isn't to chase a loss of control — it's to learn to recognize, prevent, and manage it in a safe environment.

Telemetry and Thinking Like a Race Driver

Telemetry is a measurement system that tracks every input from you and the car: brake point, brake pressure, throttle application, steering angle, entry speed, exit speed, lateral forces, and lap-to-lap consistency. The data reveals the difference between a good lap and your best lap, and it usually comes down to a tenth of a second that adds up corner by corner. Even without an advanced telemetry system, you can learn to think the same way: remember your brake point and the moment you got on the throttle, and aim to repeat your best performance again and again.

Two drivers lap the track in the same time. One drops all of his best time into a single extreme corner; the other builds the same time out of five consistent corners. The data shows the second driver is safer and has more room to improve.

Focusing only on top speed. Professional drivers focus mainly on braking consistency, throttle application, and steady steering angle over time.
